A new sushi restaurant has opened in central Keizer.
Cherry’s Nagani (the sign reads simply “Nagani”) is in Keizer Plaza in the 4900 block of River Road. [MAP: 2] The restaurant offers sushi along with salads, chicken rice bowls, soups and noodles.
Cherry Fong is the owner. A native of Vietnam, she worked in the restaurant industry in Hawaii – living there for 20 years – before being persuaded by relatives she should relocate to Salem.
Upon moving to Salem she opened Cherry’s Asian Food in Salem, but quickly found she wanted a smaller, more intimate atmosphere.
That’s what she got at Nagani. There’s only about six tables and a small sushi bar – the entire place is probably just more than 500 square feet.
“Small is good because it’s family style and I enjoy cooking for customers,” Fong said.
Fong said she tries to use less sugar and salt than some of her competitors.
Rolls with seaweed inside include the inari, vegetable, California, Philly, unagi and even the Keizer roll: Real crab meat, cream cheese, cucumber and avocado.
Their maki rolls include tuna, shrimp, salmon and even carrot. Other standard offerings are a wide selection of nigiri (fish over rolled rice) and sashimi (fish served over a bowl of rice).
Appetizers include miso soup and three different types of salad: Calamari, seaweed and cucumber.
Their non-sushi fare includes curry chicken and a homemade-style shoyn chicken. Green salads are available with these.
On the menu with noodles include curry chicken, chicken and shrimp, meatball and fish in three different flavors.
Their rolls and plates are customizable – they don’t mind putting essentially whatever they have into most of the items if you want it. You can build a sushi roll more or less from scratch.
