A fire at Clearview Apartments in east Keizer Wednesday afternoon killed at least one cat and damaged at least four homes.
Keizer Fire personnel were dispatched at 4:37 p.m. Firefighters from Marion County Fire Dist. 1 and Salem Fire Department also responded. There were no apparent injuries to people, but KFD spokesperson Anne-Marie Storms said at least one cat died in the fire. The cause is under investigation.
Flames were shooting from a second-story window when personnel arrived.
Jasmine Grove lived in one of the apartments with her boyfriend and mother.
“That’s everything they have; it’s all gone,” she said through tears.
Arriving fire crews found fire burning in the rear of a downstairs apartment. The flames had traveled into the upstairs apartment were spreading through both residences. Four apartments in the building received heavy smoke, water and fire damage. Damage estimates are pending.
The apartment complex is owned by Greg and Monique Morgan and Katharyn Skorniak. Morgan was at the complex at the time of the fire, he and the maintenance worker, Josh Wolfe attempted to evacuate the apartments.
Morgan and Wolf had been doing some work at the apartment complex when they smelled smoke and heard someone yell. When they opened the apartment door they saw heavy black smoke and flames coming from the rear of the apartment.
Initial reports indicate at least 10 adults were displaced by the blaze. No human injuries were reported, but at least one cat perished in the fire. Officials from American Red Cross were asked to respond. Cause of the fire is under investigation.
Seven engines, two medics, one duty officer vehicle, one ladder truck, one air rig, one fire investigation vehicle and 40 firefighters responded to the incident.
