A fired public works employee and the city of Keizer have reached a financial settlement.
Roland Herrera, who worked in the department for 19 years before his termination in September, will receive a payout of approximately $20,000. In exchange Herrera agreed to drop an arbitration appeal and to not sue the city for race and age discrimination.
Officials never revealed why Herrera, a former Keizer First Citizen, was let go.
The agreement also calls for retroactively converting the end of his employment with the city to a “resignation in lieu of termination.”
“Although the city does not believe you have any valid claims, we recognize your long length of service and believe that resolution of our differences would be mutually beneficial,” wrote City Manager Chris Eppley.
Signs around town reading “Friends Supporting Roland” must be taken down in a timely manner, states the agreement. Both parties agree not to make negative comments about the other, outside of legal proceedings.
According to a Facebook page set up to support Herrera, the city unsuccessfully fought to prevent Herrera from collecting unemployment.
Of the $20,000, the agreement describes $2,000 as wages and $18,000 as a lump sum.
