Council supports 3rd bridge option

Of the Keizertimes

The discussion over a proposed third bridge in Salem spilled into Keizer Monday evening.

The topic came up during a presentation at the July 29 Keizer City Council meeting. Peter Fernandez, Public Works director for the City of Salem, talked about the third bridge and options that have been looked at.

“The environmental impact study process for the bridge has been going on for seven years,” Fernandez said. “The idea has been going on for many years. This is the latest iteration, perhaps the farthest we’ve gotten.”

An oversight team had recommended an alternative referred to as 4D; however, the proposal didn’t get much support during four public hearings or from Salem councilors. Councilors in Salem recommended moving ahead with a different proposal, known as the Salem Alternative, in late June.

“They want it to be a nice looking structure, and to minimize the piers in the water,” Fernandez said. “We do want to recognize regional traffic needs to get to Salem Parkway as efficiently as possible, but on the ground.”
