Donald Ray Conner

Donald Ray Conner, 80, of Woodburn, died at home with his wife and children by his side on May 31, 2014.

Born in Portland to Lester E. Conner Sr. and Winnetta B. Conner, he attended Highland and Orient Grade Schools, graduating in 1952 from Gresham High School.

Don worked various jobs before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953, serving in Germany until 1955. Don worked for Union Pacific Railroad and Western Auto until 1960 when he was employed at NW Natural Gas in Eugene for 35 years, retiring in 1995.

Don married Helen L. Snell in May 1957. After retiring Don and Helen enjoyed family and friends at their home in Florence, where they loved to fish for salmon. In 2004 they moved to Woodburn with a golf course in the back yard, where Don loved to golf. They also enjoyed spending winters in the Arizona sun.

Don is survived by his wife Helen and their three children: Dale Conner of Woodburn, Kristi Miller (Steve) of Springfield and Kelly Young (Harold) of Keizer; nine grandchildren: Renee Miller Harding, Tonya Miller, Cameron, Kyle and Colby Hlavinka, Hailee, Bryce, Tyler and Priscilla Young and two special girls, Xena and Dezarae.

There are eight great-grandchildren: Camielle, Wyatt, Tessa, Tucker, Conner, Stella, Kassidy, Bennett and a ninth one soon.

Don is also survived by two brothers and four sisters: Lester Conner Jr. (Nancy) of Vancouver, Charles Conner (companion Martha) of Tigard, Lois Christensen (Jerry) of Woodburn, Linda Conner (companion Jane) of Oregon City, Barbie Boren (Tom) of Prineville, Kathy Weidman (Bill) of Sandy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Don had a passion for many things; golf, fishing, hunting and camping, but most of all spending time with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 6 at the Woodburn Senior Estates Auditorium, 1776 Country Club Road, Woodburn. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

Janice Nissen of Keizer passed away at the age of 89 on May 19, 2014 while in hospice care.

Janice Oetinger was born in Portland and attended grade school at the Madeline and then Grant High School. She then attended Oregon State University from 1943 to 1946, graduating with a degree in Home Economics.

She married James C. Nissen of Seattle, Wash. in 1950. Subsequent corporate transfers took them back to Seattle, then to Salt Lake City, Utah; Whittier, Calif. and St. Louis, Mo. before eventually returning to the West Coast in 1969. They lived in Novato, Calif. for several years, with one last move down to Orange County before they retired and came home to Oregon.

Janice and Jim had three sons: James Nissen of Campbell, Calif.; Robert Nissen of Littleton, Colo. and John Nissen of Ballard, Wash. Janice and Jim also have seven grandchildren.

Janice was always involved in various activities during her retirement, including being president of the McNary Women’s Golf Association. She was also on the Salem Hospital Auxillary, was active in the Meals on Wheels Program as well as devoting much time to activities involving her college sorority, Pi Beta Phi, over the years.

Janice is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jim Nissen of Keizer.

A Memorial Mass is scheduled at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 at St. Edward Catholic Church in Keizer, with a reception at the church to follow. Arrangements entrusted to Keizer Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services. Please share your thoughts and memories of Janice at www.keizerchapel.com.
